I’ve been keeping tabs on Star Citizen for a while, but was completely blown away by Chris Roberts keynote at CitizenCon. The hype is real.

Star Citizen is a procedurally generated space exploration game by Cloud Emperium that’s currently in development. It was originally launched on Kickstarter in 2012 and was overshadowed last year by the rise of No Man’s Sky, which promised unique discoveries and beautiful worlds to explore. Sadly we got bland planets and discoveries that had no relevance, but that’s a different story.

 

This update on the game caught me completely unawares and gave me hope that it may turn out to be what No Man’s Sky was meant to be. We all know how that ended up

 

The keynote is an hour long, but is really worth the watch. What Chris and his team are doing seems incredible. It includes footage of sprawling Blade Runner-esque like cities, vehicles, weapons and a trip from the planet’s surface up to an orbiting space station.

 

To be fair, the graphics look almost unbelievable and I think it will be very difficult to strike a balance between scale and actual depth and relevance of what you’re doing in game. This was the problem with No Man’s Sky and I’ll be sceptical till I see the game launch, but it does look very promising so far.

 

There’s currently no release date for the game, which makes me sad and I can’t wait for the day that this launches. Show me a gamer that doesn’t want to put on the Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack and pretend to be Star Lord and I’ll show you a liar!
